4 Day Rwanda Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

Brief information about the tour

This 5-day gorilla and chimp safari in Rwanda will take you to Volcanoes and Nyungwe Forest National Parks, which are home to two of Africa’s most important primate locations.

The Volcanoes National Park in northwest Africa preserves the Rwandan side of the Virunga Massif, which is home to mountain gorillas. The safari also includes a historical visit to Nyanza’s Royal Palace and Butare’s Ethnographic Museum.

Day 1: Kigali, Ruhengeri, and Volcanoes National Park

Upon meeting up with a professional tour guide from monumental expeditions, you will start with a visit to the genocide memorial site in Kigali. Then, take a 2-hour journey to Musanze, Rwanda’s second-largest town, with its spectacular backdrop of five volcanic mountains known as the Virungas.

When you get to Musanze, you will see the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

These magnificent twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo, as well as their Swamp Rugezi, are ideal picturesque, tranquil, and attractive locations for bird viewing. Rugezi wetland is also one of Rwanda’s top seven birding sites (IBAs).

You will visit the Dian Fossey Museum and the Musanze local market in the evening.

Day 2: Volcanoes National Park, Gisenyi

After your early morning breakfast, you will kick off the second day with the gorilla adventure, travelling to the park headquarters for a briefing from park officials before venturing into the bush in quest of the endangered mountain gorilla The walk will take you across the Volcanic Mountains that run from Congo to Rwanda and Uganda.

The lush green vegetation that shelters the hills, as well as the variety of birds and other species, combine to create unforgettable safari memories. The gorilla journey might last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements.

After such an incredible hour among the gorillas, you will return to the lodge for lunch, check out, and continue your drive to Gisenyi, arriving in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.

Day 3: Gisenyi-Nyungwe Forest National Park

Following your morning breakfast, you will check out and then transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park, riding along the Congo-Nile divide and viewing the magnificent views of the water catchment areas. The vistas of Lake Kivu and the resort towns of Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu on the way to Nyungwe make the journey worthwhile. You will get to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Nyungwe forest chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

Following breakfast, you’ll proceed to the park headquarters for a briefing before heading into the jungle in search of the monkey. The chimpanzee trek lasts 2 to 5 hours, including a one-hour firsthand contact with the chimpanzees on the fourth day of your 5-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Chimps.

After the trip, you will return to the resort for some relaxation and lunch. After lunch, you’ll head to the Uwinka Visitor Centre for an afternoon Nyungwe canopy walk.

The two-hour trek on top of the forest canopy provides a stunning view of the forest and the many creatures that live there, such as monkeys and birds. You will return to the lodge later in the evening for supper and your overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali

You will check out of the hotel following breakfast and begin your journey back to Kigali. You may halt in Butare to see the Ethnographic Museum, Rwanda’s largest museum, which has over 100,000 objects that describe Rwanda’s history and culture. Following this visit, you will be taken on a tour to the Nyanza Palace, the Royal residence of Rwanda’s two Kings, King Musinga and his heir, King Rudahigwa. You may also see the traditional Inyambo cows with their gorgeous horns, which can put on quite a show.

Following an informative tour of Butare, you will proceed on to Kigali City, where you will be dropped off at the airport for your night flight. This is where your 5-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Chimpanzee Safari comes to a close.
