Tanzania’s weather varies by area, but there is always a good time to visit Tanzania! The weather is warmest and most humid around the shore, whereas the north and highlands of Tanzania are cooler due to altitude.

Throughout the year, temperatures range from 22°C to 31°C. Tanzania’s nighttime temperature ranges between 10°C to 22°C. Because Zanzibar is so near to the Equator, its beaches offer a distinct tropical environment.

Tanzania’s climate: the seasons

Tanzania has two seasons per year: rainy and dry. The wet season (also known as the rainy season) lasts from the end of October to the beginning of December, and then from the end of March to the beginning of June. They are known as “short-” and “long-” showers.

These tropical rains usually begin in the late afternoon and last all night until early morning. The showers of Africa are well-known worldwide and are a peaceful, fascinating sight to see on a visit to Tanzania!

Is it possible to go on safari during the rainy season?

Tanzania’s weather is beautiful all year, and even when heavy rains fall most afternoons during the rainy season, the natural landscape comes to life. Nature is colorful, the grass is lush and green, gorgeous flowers bloom, animals find lots of food, temps are pleasant and calm, and, best of all, Tanzania’s biggest tourist attractions are significantly less packed with people.

Another advantage of going during the rainy season is that safaris and accommodations are less expensive. Traveling during the wet season has the drawback of certain lodgings being closed and (occasionally) terrible road conditions. Fortunately, this only affects the roads in South Tanzania’s national parks.

The following national parks are open and available for visitors during the rainy season in Tanzania. Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, and Arusha National Park. Tanzanian national parks to avoid during the wet season include Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi, and Udzungwa. If any of the later places are on your Tanzania bucket list, be sure to visit during the dry season.
