Chimpanzee Tracking and Habituation at Semuliki National Park | chimpanzee trekking | chimpanzee habituation

At Semuliki National Park in Uganda, visitors have the opportunity to participate in both chimpanzee tracking and chimpanzee habituation experiences. Here’s an overview of each activity.

Chimpanzee Tracking

Chimpanzee tracking allows you to venture into the forest with trained guides to search for and observe wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Here’s what you can expect during a chimpanzee tracking experience at Semuliki National Park.

Briefing

Before the trek, you’ll receive a briefing from park rangers. They will provide important information about chimpanzee behavior, safety guidelines, and the rules and regulations for the activity.

Trekking

Accompanied by experienced guides, you’ll follow trails and sometimes navigate through dense vegetation in search of chimpanzee groups. The guides are skilled at tracking the chimps and will use their knowledge of their movements and vocalizations to locate them.

Chimpanzee Encounter

Once the chimpanzees are located, you’ll have the opportunity to observe them from a close but safe distance. You can watch their behaviors, interactions, and feeding habits, and learn about their social structure and conservation.

Time Limit and Group Size

The time spent with the chimpanzees during tracking is typically limited to a maximum of one hour to minimize disturbance and maintain their natural behavior. Group sizes are also regulated to minimize the impact on the animals and enhance the visitor experience.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHE)

The chimpanzee habituation experience at Semuliki National Park is a longer and more immersive activity. It involves spending extended periods with a chimpanzee group that is undergoing the habituation process. Here’s what you can expect during a CHE

Duration

Unlike chimpanzee tracking, the habituation experience can last for several hours or even a full day. This allows visitors to spend more time with the chimps and observe their behaviors throughout different activities and timeframes.

Habituation Process

During a CHE, you’ll join researchers and habituators who are working to familiarize the chimpanzees with human presence. By gradually habituating the chimps, researchers aim to make them more comfortable around people, facilitating scientific study and ecotourism activities.

Observing Behavior

Throughout the habituation experience, you’ll have the chance to closely observe the chimpanzees and document their behaviors, including feeding, socializing, grooming, and possibly even tool use.

Research Contribution

By participating in a CHE, you actively contribute to ongoing research and conservation efforts. Your presence helps habituate the chimpanzees and supports the long-term protection of their habitat.

It’s important to note that permits are required for both chimpanzee tracking and habituation experiences at Semuliki National Park. It’s advisable to book permits in advance through Monumental Expeditions and Safaris.
