Activities at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park | Safari activities | What to do on safari

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in southwestern Uganda and is known for its unique biodiversity and the opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Here are some activities you can engage in at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Gorilla Trekking

The park is home to a population of endangered mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience to closely observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat. You’ll be guided by experienced trackers and rangers as you hike through the park’s lush forests in search of the gorilla families. Please note that gorilla trekking requires a permit, and it’s advisable to book in advance due to limited availability.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Apart from mountain gorillas, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also home to the rare and endangered golden monkeys. Golden monkey tracking allows you to witness these playful and colorful primates as they leap through the bamboo forests. Just like gorilla trekking, permits are required for this activity.

Volcano Hiking

The park encompasses three dormant volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. These volcanic peaks offer exciting opportunities for hiking and climbing. You can embark on a challenging trek to the summit of one of these volcanoes, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape along the way.

Bird Watching

With its diverse ecosystems ranging from montane forests to bamboo zones, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a haven for bird enthusiasts. The park is home to over 180 bird species, including several endemic and Albertine Rift Valley endemics. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful birds such as the Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, and Archer’s Robin-Chat.

Nature Walks

Explore the park on foot by taking a guided nature walk. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, you can venture into the forest, learn about the local flora and fauna, and discover the park’s natural wonders, such as waterfalls and scenic viewpoints.

Cultural Encounters

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is situated in an area inhabited by the Batwa pygmies, an indigenous forest-dwelling tribe. Engaging in a cultural encounter with the Batwa allows you to learn about their traditional way of life, their hunting and gathering skills, and their rich cultural heritage.
