Where to find African Big Five Animals in Uganda.
Uganda Safari Big Five
Uganda presents you the Big Five- The Lion is known as the king of the Jungle, Leopard, Elephant huge in nature, Rhino and the Buffalo. To the big game hunters in another time they originally came up with the term ‘Big Five’ and were not just basing on the size of these animals, No, but the hardships they faced when hunting them, the aggressiveness/fierceness of these animals when confronted, surrounded /detained. Nevertheless, the term is still ongoing and used today by various tour /safari companies and tourists/travelers to Africa as a way of marketing these fierce animals & making them more attractive to travelers/tourists. And more added to these are Africa ‘s best in Uganda –the Mountain Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and so on.
What are the animals that make up the ‘Big Five’ if I may ask?
1.Lions in Uganda
This is referred to as King of the Jungle and is sighted gamely in several parks in Uganda like Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park there where you can also spot the tree climbing lions in the Ishasha section of Queen Elizabeth National Park(they are good at climbing trees where they hide to avoid Buffalos and also rest) plus also in the isolated/far- off of Kidepo Valley National Park & Semuliki National Park inclusive. Not only those places but it’s also evident that they have spotted them at Lake Mburo National Park. Traditionally one of the most hunted after of the Big Five. Lions are up on the food series, they expose the marauders/predators and they are very good when it comes to hunting.
2.Leopards in Uganda
These are characterized with elements of speed/being rapid and fast, intangible/mysterious. Leopards in Uganda mainly reside in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Semuliki National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, Lake Mburo National Park, Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park. These animals are more numerous, they are mostly seen at night (more active in the night) that’s why you can engage yourself in a nocturnal Game drive at Queen Elizabeth National Park and with luck you might view some of them. However, you could also still spot one during an early game drive in some of the above parks. Leopards are very lonely and shy that’s why you can never find more than one together and they have the ability to stay in a wider series of habitat. They also climb trees, can swim compared to lions. A male leopard weighs up to 200 Ibs and can jump straight high up to 10 feet. These leopards appreciate thick bush & Riverine and usually when they have killed they prefer keeping their meal/food up in the trees to avoid lions and Hyenas from coming close to their food.
3. Buffalos in Uganda
In Uganda there is existence of 2 types of water Buffalos-large savannah Buffalos & small forest Buffalos. These animals reside in National Parks like Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley. These are quiet powerful /formidable animals and astounding to observe/witness. They are the most dangerous animals in Africa that’s why they are part of the Big Five list. An adult Buffalo weighs 700 kg and as large as 4-6 feet tall. Buffalos live in open grasslands, live in large herds of totals nearer to a thousand.
4.Elephants in Uganda
Uganda has gotten both the Savanna Elephants and Forest Elephants which are smaller though and with some hair on them. So the Savanna type can be found in most of the National Parks and several settings like the forest woodlands & savannah areas as well. These Elephants of both types are found in places/parks like Murchison falls, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, but not in Lake Mburo National Park. Elephants can grow up to 14 feet tall & 30 feet wide. These animals are very social, stay in family groups of 100 individuals, an adult eats about 375 Ibs of vegetation & drinks 30-50 gallons of water daily. Mother Elephants are so defensive of their little ones, these animals as well feed on leaves, fruits, seed pods, grass, twigs, etc.
5.Rhinos in Uganda
We are all aware that due to the occurrence of political instabilities, rustling/poaching of these animals because of the high demand of the Rhinos horns for purposes of getting medicine out of them, this led to a great loss of these animals in Uganda. Uganda sheltered thousands of Rhinos, both black and white. At present there is now only Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary where there is an active Rhino restoration program. This huge replacement and protective area which enables these Rhinos to wander in the wild but yet safe. At Ziwa Sanctuary in Uganda is the best place where to see and clearly spot these Rhinos which is situated near Masindi district on your way to Murchison Falls National Park.
Mountain Gorillas in Uganda
These endangered species usually are not involved among the list of the Big -Five, the gentle giants are searched for by thousands of tourists/trekkers/travelers year in, year out and its highlighted allure since it is the only East African country where you can spot not only the Mountain Gorillas but a variety of various African Wildlife like the Big Five animals outlined above.
