Among the African Great Lakes is lake Kivu-Rwanda. It is in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of East Africa Rift valley, on the boundary between the Democratic Republic Congo and Rwanda. Lake Kivu discharges into the Ruzizi River, which runs south-east into Lake Tanganyika.

One of the ideal locations to unwind after your Gorilla trekking adventure is Rubavu, formerly known as Gisenyi, a big town on the northern border of the lake an hour’s drive from Volcanoes National Park.
