Located at the foot of the Albertine Rift Valley, the oldest and biggest national park in Uganda is Murchison Falls National Park, which is primarily famous for three-day wildlife safaris and the majestic falls. The park was once called Kabalega National Park. Reachable by car or plane, Murchison Falls is situated 305 kilometers in the country’s northwest.

The park, which was first designated as a wildlife preserve in 1926, is now home to 451 bird species and 76 animal species. The Bugungu and Karuma wildlife parks combine to form the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.

The Victoria Nile cuts over Murchison Falls National Park, plunging 45 meters over the valley wall to form the spectacular falls. These falls are the park’s main draw and the last rapid in an 80-kilometer section of rapids. After the river’s vitality is exhausted, the powerful waterfall turns it into a serene stream that empties into Lake Albert after flowing over the bottom of the rift valley. This section of the Nile River is home to some of the most breathtaking animal shows in all of Uganda.

Protecting Uganda’s imperilled rhino population is the mission of the private, non-profit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Since the enormous conflict of the 1970s and the extensive poaching of the 1990s wiped off rhino populations in Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley National Parks, this park takes great pride in being home to a distinct animal species known as the white rhino.

Because it is home to Uganda’s rare “White Rhinos,” the sanctuary is a must-visit for many visitors to Murchison Falls National Park.Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda is the destination for wildlife safaris organized by Monumental Expeditions and Safaris.
