Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center
Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center.
Located in Bisesero, this memorial site pays tribute to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. In the Bisesero region, forty thousand people lost their lives. In an unusual move, these individuals put up a fight and even called on the French peacekeepers for help. Because they were not authorized to do so, the soldiers left the scene of the massacre. In the Bisesero area, forty thousand Rwandans lost their lives.
One of six significant memorial facilities in Rwanda dedicated to commemorating the Rwandan genocide, this one stands tall and proud. Additionally, there are memorial centers in Nyamata and Nyarubuye, as well as those at Kigali, Murambi, and Ntarama, where the genocide was commemorated.Discover more about Rwandan museums here.
Perched atop Bisesero hill, with sweeping views of Lake Kivu and the surrounding hills, is the Bisesero genocide memorial center. The highway trip is mostly pleasant with a little section of roughness as you approach the center, and the guides from Monumental Expeditions and Safaris are quite familiar with the region. Viewing the mass graves together may help bring back memories of the Holocaust and teach you about the resistance struggle.
It was unexpected that the villagers, who lived on a range of hills with a horrific history, would be waving and smiling as we drove through their little towns. Skulls and bones from victims of the genocide are displayed in three buildings of the museum, which is barely a museum in and of itself.
On top of the hill, there is a monument and four burial sites dedicated to the fallen heroes who fought their final battle against the Hutu militia who wanted to wipe them off the face of the earth. We at Monumental Expeditions and Safaris can arrange for you to visit this little but profoundly important site so that you can see how human we are and how capable we are of destroying not only ourselves but everything we hold dear.
About forty thousand individuals are said to have been killed here; getting to this genocide memorial site requires a drive. The Tutsis’s valiant efforts to beat off their Hutu invaders in the Bisesero highlands with rudimentary weaponry like stones and sticks were mostly ineffective, and they met their grisly end as a result.
