Gorilla tracking licenses for the Buhoma Sector: In 1990, gorilla habituation began in Buhoma, a tiny town in Kanungu District, which is situated at the northern edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Mubare Family Gorillas
The Mubare gorilla group, which began accepting tourists in 1993, is the most established gorilla family in Uganda. The gorillas’ initial sighting by trackers was on Mubare Hill, deep within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, hence the moniker.

There are now 8 members of the group, including 1 dominant silver back.

The Habinyanja Gorilla Clade

After becoming acclimated in 1997, the Habinyanja gorilla family welcomed guests for the first time in 1999. The Rukiga word “Nyanja,” which meaning “a place with water,” is whence the term “Habinyanja” originates. This group’s name comes from the fact that they were initially spotted close to a swamp in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

There are currently 13 members of the group, including one dominant silverback.

The Gorilla Family Rushegura
In February 2002, this group broke away from the bigger Habinyanja family in a location known as Rushegura.

There are currently 14 members of the group, including one dominating silverback.

Gorilla family Katwe

One of the new gorilla families to emerge in the park’s northern region is Katwe; they split off from the Mubale family.

There are presently seven members of this group in addition to one silverback.

The Muyambi gorilla family

Another new gorilla family that emerged from the breakup of the Habinyanja family is called Muyambi.

There are currently 4 members of the gang and 1 dominant silver back.

How many gorilla tracking permits are sold each day in the Buhoma Sector?
With five gorilla families in the Buhoma area, each group is monitored by a maximum of eight individuals, meaning that forty gorilla permits are sold each day.

Where can I purchase permission to track gorillas in the Buhoma sector?

Gorilla tracking licenses for the Buhoma sector can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Monumental Expeditions and Safaris. Gorilla tracking is conducted daily throughout the year, and permits are sold daily at the UWA headquarters in Kampala, Uganda.
