The Gorilla Family Nshongi

The family’s initial sighting was near a river, hence the name of the Nshongi gorilla group. The word “Nshongi” comes from the word “Omushongi Gwoboki,” which means “honey” and refers to the river’s rich hue. When the family opened for tourism in September 2009, their size made them stand out.

Mishaya Family of Silverback Gorillas Although Mishaya belonged to the Nshongi group, it made the decision to become its own family in July 2010. He was able to attract females from other groups in the area and grow his group because he was a well-known fighter who frequently initiated encounters with other gorilla families. He fought with a non-habiting gorilla family once more in April 2011, which left him and a 2-year-old child with severe injuries. Veterinary professionals from the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project attended to the wounds.

Family of Kahungye Gorillas
In Bwindi National Park, the Kahungye group is one of the gorilla families that is newest to the area. October 2011 saw the family open for tourists; however, the group split up less than a year later, forming a new family known as Busingye.

The Bweza Family of Gorillas

The Nshongi family was the biggest gorilla troop that have ever been habituated. But Silverback Mishaya made the decision to start a family of his own in July 2010. Another silverback, Bweza, favored to keep his distance from the others two years later. The UWA rangers initially thought that they would reunite, but when it became apparent that the break was permanent, this “new” organization began accepting visitors in December 2012.
