Fitness Level – Am I fit enough for a Gorilla Trek? Our Advice to make your Trek Less Strenuous
Gorilla Trekking is not like a visit to a Zoo or a Walk in the Park:
The Gorilla Trek you will be taken on starts on traces of one kind/ another. As you get nearer to the Gorilla Family, you will be touring. There are most often no traces/trails. A new path, if you can call it, is slashed for you via the huge vegetation. Another reason we commend that even though you might be fit physically dress for fortification, involving garden gloves for your hands or you will be charred by irritating nettles. The new trail is tough for most trekkers, that is why we commend you getting into shape even with modest exercise.
In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, your ascent to the Bamboo Forest level and beyond. The treks differ from modest fitness level mandated to a modest fitness level. In Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it can be up & down hills & valleys, across streams, via the dense undergrowth of Forest. The Good News is this, none of our customers ever gave up.
Use the Services of a Porter to assist you:
Carry with you a day-pack, 2 ltrs of Water, your packed lunch, a few snacks, maybe some insect repellent in a Ziploc Bag to shield the flies (not many mosquitoes are found at the elevations where you are trekking gentle giants). It is one thing to move your body along the Traces. It is another thing to have a day-pack slog you down. The exact reason you need to use a Porter, Male, or Female ones is obtainable. They, unlike you, are used to the raise, applied to the trails, used to the span of time included and are in good shape, besides they make a decent income by Ugandan morals/values carrying your Backpack up and down on the Gorilla Trek. The rate is slight, and even though you might want to illustrate that you can do it, take our recommendations, use a porter, fund a Ugandan Family, your money will pay for food, school fees for children, clothes, and medical care. Besides, their amenity eases your load, something you might relish, no matter what your level of fitness is.
Use a Local Walking Stick:
You are coming during one of the Peak Seasons of the Year, and you forgot something, you are trekking gentle giants (Gorillas) in a rainforest, it can rain year in, year out. The traces/trails become muddy and slimy, and once again, no matter what your level of fitness is, you need a good pair of boots with grips on them and a walking stick to balance yourself while you steer on the slimy/Slippery Trails.
You can buy these walking Sticks at trail heads, but often they are available at lodges on hand for their visitors. You can purchase an ornamental one, use it and take it home as a memento. A Walking Stick will keep you stable on the trails and preclude you from falling when the paths are slimy.
Walking Stick – do not trek without one.
I had Hip Surgery a year ago – can I trek Gorillas?
There are always debates about natural groups and harder gorilla groups to trek in Uganda & Rwanda. There are what might be termed as a more relaxed trek, a shorter trek, less tireless Trek, and you spend 1 hr with a Gorilla Family. We do our all to Make sure that you are in line.
In extreme cases where one is not able to engage in the trekking activity by foot, there is still a way, Four Porters (12 total) and more support people, carry you in and out on a day chair, that is like a rickshaw without wheels supported by four men. In this case it can take up to 12 porters, and there is a charge for that help, but you can see the gentle giants (Gorillas). A 94-year-old Italian woman was carried into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in such a way a few years back, it was on her bucket list to spot the gentle giants (Mountain Gorillas) and she did.
When it comes to age, the oldest Customers we had, an American Couple 79 and 74 years old, desired to trek the hardest Gorilla Group to trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They did it and treasured it. We often have customers in their 70’s trek gentle giants (Gorillas), and we make rewards for them to lessen the trek, and it normally works out.
