Day 1: Arrival at Kigali international airport

Now you begin your incredible journey of Rwanda on your wildlife and gorilla safari. On your arrival, a driving guide from monumental expeditions will pick you up at your accommodation or the Kigali International Airport.

Day 2: Kigali city tour and transfer to Akagera National Park

From breakfast, we take a city tour of Kigali, stopping at significant locations such as the Genocide Memorial, artisan shops, and the Kandt National Museum. You may select which sights to see since after lunch in the city, we will go to Akagera National Park in the afternoon.

Akagera National Park is located in eastern Rwanda; our travel will take around 2 hours, and we will arrive late afternoon before proceeding to the lodge for check-in. You can make brief stops en route to Akagera Park to photograph the gorgeous countryside.

Day 3: Game drive and a boat cruise

get up early and go immediately after breakfast to explore Akagera National Park in search of large creatures like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, several antelope species, and freshly returned lions. The majority of the game drives take place in the northern area of the park, where we will pass most of the day before returning to the lodge later that afternoon.

The Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s largest, boasting stunning nature and terrain. It contains a variety of native animals and is a birder’s paradise with over 500 species. There are additional possibilities to explore the park on foot with a ranger on a nature walk, which may be added on request, particularly in the afternoon.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Following breakfast, we leave the fantastic animal adventure at Akagera National Park and go to the Volcanoes National Park, which is home to the gigantic gentle apes. It is a homeland for mountain gorillas, providing the gorillas with the ideal atmosphere and sustenance.

The Volcanoes National Park is located in Kinigi, Musanze, about two hours from Kigali. The road from Akagera National Park to Musanze passes via Kigali city and various villages with beautiful scenery. You can request that the guide stop for photo opportunities at various viewpoints as you see the unending hills and realize why Rwanda is known as “the land of a thousand hills.” We’ll arrive at the lodge later that evening, ready for the gorilla trek the following day.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking

After quite a good night’s sleep, your entire day is dedicated to meeting mountain gorillas in the lush and deep forests of the Virunga hills, specifically the Volcanoes National Park. Following your early breakfast, your guide will transport you to the briefing location to hear from the ranger guide on how to behave in the park and split you into the several gorilla families.

While you wait for the briefing, enjoy Rwandan cultural dances and freshly made Rwandan coffee. Following a tutorial at the Visitors Center, you will go out on the hike that will finally lead you to the gorillas in their natural environment. The trip can last anything from an hour to many hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the night before; you must be reasonably fit to appreciate this adventure.

Based on how long the gorilla tracking lasts, you may be able to visit the Gorilla Guardians community to get a flavor of Rwandan culture.

Day 6: Departure

We hope you had a wonderful experience discovering Rwanda’s animals and culture and will remember these experiences fondly. This is the final day of your safari; after a leisurely breakfast, we begin our drive to Kigali for your return flight or hotel. If your aircraft arrives late at night, you may add an alternative adventure such as golden monkey trekking, hiking one of the virungas, or visiting Dian Fossey’s tomb to learn more about her conservation efforts.
