2 Days Golden Monkey trekking in Rwanda
Overview
Our 2-day golden monkey trekking tour in Rwanda’s Volcanos National Park brings you to one of the continent’s oldest wildlife protection sites. The Volcanoes National Park is located in Rwanda’s northern region. It is undoubtedly Rwanda’s most famous national park.
The park’s main draw are the rare mountain gorillas, but it also has golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes, bush duikers, and spotted hyenas. There are 178 bird species recorded in Volcanoes National Park. The park’s flora is diversified, with afro-alpine varieties (at higher elevations), bamboo forest on lower mountain slopes, hygenia rainforests, savanna grasslands, and wetlands.
The golden monkey journey is unique in that there is no age limit. Families with children can also go to track the primates. Tragically, golden monkeys, like mountain gorillas, are vulnerable. Their numbers have declined in the previous two decades, and primatologists are concerned that if nothing is done, they may go gone.

Day 1: transfer from kigali to Ruhengeri – iby’iwacu cultural village
Our Guide will take you up from your accommodation or the airport in Kigali in the morning. He will provide you with information about the excursion and take you on a city tour of Kigali. Kigali city tours include stops at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, the former presidential palace, local markets, and craft stores. After lunch, you will proceed to Volcanoes National Park.
The ride takes around 2 hours and passes through gorgeous scenery with rolling hills and people working in their gardens. When you arrive at your lodge, check in, relax, and take in the breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes. The tour guide will come and pick you up for a tour of the Iby’iwacu Cultural Centre. Rwanda’s most visited cultural attraction is the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village. All of Rwanda’s tribes have gathered to celebrate their cultural heritage via dance, play, and stories. This is where you will discover all you need to know about Rwandan people and culture. You will be invited to join and purchase a local memento.
Day 2: Golden monkey trekking and departure
Get up early and eat breakfast before heading to Kinigi’s offices. The briefing begins at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 8:00 a.m. You will then be led along other trackers to the beginning site, which is at the base of the Volcano. The view is stunning, with deep green forest and five volcanoes in all directions. The monkeys are easy to see because they enjoy eating bamboo, which grows on the lower slopes of the volcanoes. You get one hour with them when you locate them. If they move, you are free to follow them.
Unlike mountain gorillas, golden monkeys are not bothered by flash photography. They actually like being photographed. Due to their motion, taking excellent images is difficult, but making movies is simple. You will be delighted as you see golden monkeys display their natural talents in climbing trees and grabbing delectable shoots from the borders of bamboo trees. They adore potatoes and will not hesitate to raid human gardens for a handful. You will have a better understanding of their behavior and why they are endangered. After an hour with the gorillas, you will return to the starting location and continue your return trip to Kigali.
