Brief information about the tour

The 3 day Lake Bunyonyi trip brings you to one of Uganda’s most naturally gorgeous crater lakes for relaxing, island hopping, swimming, canoeing, and a variety of other activities. Lake Bunyonyi is located in the districts of Kisoro and Kabale in southern Uganda. The lake comprises 6 islets and is 1,962 kilometers above sea level. Steep hills surround Lake Bunyonyi on all sides. Lake Bunyonyi is claimed to be Africa’s second deepest at 3,000 feet (900 meters). Bunyonyi (Place of Little Birds in the local tongue) derives its name from the fact that the region is home to over 200 different bird species. It is one of Uganda’s greatest birdwatching locations.

Day 1: Pickup from Entebbe or Kampala; Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Wake up early and eat breakfast while you wait for a Monumental Expeditions representative. The 7-hour journey to Lake Bunyonyi will soon begin, with various stops along the way. Southwestern Uganda features some of the nicest landscapes in the country. The picturesque scenery, enormous wetlands, and Mpanga forest will take your breath away. Expect to see locals tending to their crops and caring for their long-horned Ankole cattle. There will be a picture stop near the equator crossing in Kayabwe, as well as an opportunity to purchase local souvenirs. The Equator crossing allows you to place one foot in the southern and one in the northern hemispheres of the Earth. Lunch will be served in Mbarara before continuing on to Kabale and, eventually, Lake Bunyonyi.

After checking in at the hotel, you should go exploring the lake, walking along the shoreline, or simply admiring the beauty. Prepare for nighttime entertainment by local traditional dancers while you sit around a campfire, depending on whatever lodging option you pick.

Day 2: Visit the Local Communities, cave exploration, tour the Islands using a canoe, go birdwatching and do sightseeing

As you prepare for a fun-filled day, get up and have breakfast. The first thing to do in the morning is to listen to the pleasant sounds of birds. The lake is home to a diverse range of species, including the African harrier, egrets, grey-crowned cranes, hawks, herons, levillant cuckoo, Rufus breathing wryneck, weaver birds, and the white-tailed blue monad, among others. While you wait for the driver or guide, take a walk around the lakeshore to see what birds you may spot. The guide and driver will take you to the Batwa and Abaheesi blacksmith communities.

The Batwa of Lake Bunyonyi are usually found in the Orugano and Echuya forests, as well as the adjacent regions. Spend time with them and connect with them to discover how they make ends meet. You might also be interested in seeing the Bukora Cave.

After that, you may go back to the hotel/lodge for lunch before embarking on a boat trip or canoeing adventure. 3 Days Uganda Safari to Lake Bunyonyi Surrounding Areas, Rolling Hills and Terraces You will be escorted to tour the magnificent islands, where you will get even greater views of the lake. The majority of the islands are named after the prevalent bird species. The punishment island is the name given to one of the islands.

The Bakiga tribe, who lived in the region at the time, had a terrible tradition of dumping all females who were pregnant before marriage on this specific island. They were abandoned since most of them couldn’t swim. Most of the girls were eventually rescued by the guys who had pregnant them or by bachelors who couldn’t afford the bridal fee demanded by virgin parents. You will connect with the locals and tour schools and health facilities while on the islands. If you are the curious sort, you may want to pay a visit to a local traditional healer on one of the islands.

After you’ve finished your activities, the boat will take you back to the lodge for refreshments and leisure. The evening should be spent relaxing and taking small walks along the lakeshore.
