Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Para, not far from Murchison Falls National Park. This Rhino Sanctuary serves as the cornerstone for the rehabilitation of Uganda’s rhino population. Rhinos were nearly extinct in Uganda by the end of 1982. They’d been hunted and slain incessantly. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is not a zoo; rather, it is a safe haven for rhinos. An electrical barrier and security workers defend them from poachers 24 hours a day. The huge sanctuary is a frontrunner in the battle to restore Uganda’s rhino population. The refuge presently has roughly 12 rhinos. Hopefully, rhinos will be reintroduced into surrounding wildlife parks shortly.
How near to the rhinos can you go in the sanctuary?
Visitors to the refuge may monitor the rhinos and get up and personalize with them. The Rhinos may be approached on foot. If you follow the directions, the creatures are not too hazardous. The White Rhinos (at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary) are gentle giants, and approaching them on foot offers little risk. You will be accompanied and guided by a sanctuary ranger who is knowledgeable about rhino behavior. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary provides a unique opportunity to observe the Rhinos up close and on foot, rather than from a vehicle. You will have some wonderful and unusual photo possibilities when you approach the Ziwa White Rhinos.
What is the best way to go to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary?
The Ziwa rhino refuge is a three-hour journey from Kampala. On the approach to Murchison Falls National Park, this is almost a midway point. The Sanctuary may be included in your Uganda safari itinerary as part of a trip to Murchison Falls National Park or a chimp trekking safari in Budongo Forest.
Are there lodging and other options for overnight stays?
There is reasonable lodging, such as the recently constructed Amuka resort, which has a swimming pool and great cuisine, as well as reasonably priced eateries and even self-contained luxury tents.
Besides tracking rhinos, what else can you do on a visit to the sanctuary?
More activities are available during a visit to the Ziwa rhino reserve. These are some examples:
Birding: With a population of over 350 bird species, the sanctuary provides excellent birding possibilities for anyone interested in bird-watching. You may tour the sanctuary and go on a half-day or full-day birding trek. Some of the unusual bird species you may observe at the sanctuary are the prehistoric-looking Shoebill Stork, the White Crested Turaco, the Giant Kingfisher, and the speckled-breasted Woodpecker, among others. You might also go on a nature stroll.
It is feasible to spend the day trekking in the sanctuary’s wildness. Grey duiker, bushbuck, Oribi, waterbuck, reedbuck, vervet monkeys, black and white Colobus, hartebeest, mongoose, ground squirrels, and numerous reptiles like as huge monitor lizards, butterflies, and other very beautiful insects may be seen. When planning an Uganda safari itinerary with your preferred safari organization, include Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on your list of things to see before continuing on to Murchison Falls National Park or Budongo Forest. Your visit will not only be enjoyable and worthwhile for you, but you will also be helping a great cause since all costs go to the rhino fund.
