Birding on Lake Bisina

Birding on Lake Bisina – Sipi falls and Pian Upe game Reserve.

Lake Bisina Birding – Lakes The eastern extensions of Lake Kyoga are called Bisina, and these are some of the few locations in Uganda where one can see certain rare bird species, such as the fox’s weaver. Although there aren’t many tourist amenities at the location, visitors going to or from eastern Uganda can nevertheless explore it

Of the two locations, Lake Bisina is easier to reach thanks to a pleasant dirt road that heads north at Kapiri, some 20 kilometers southeast of Soroti Town, off the Mbale-Soroti main route. After that, you’ll follow the road up to the edge of Lake Bisina, where local fisherman ferry visitors to the northwest side, where a number of Fox’s weavers are located.

Though they are rarely seen all year round, these birds are typically seen in large numbers during the rainy season, particularly in March and April. The African Pygmy Goose and the lesser jacana inhabit the smaller water areas with lilies. And at the edge of the thick papyrus growth, one can often spot the elusive shoebills.

Birding on Lake Bisina: Outstanding bird species, including the handsome silver bird, Jackson’s Hornbill, Brubru and Eastern Vilet-backed Sunbird, Fawn-colored Lark, White-bellied Go-away Bird, African Grey Flycatcher, Pygmy Batis, Yellow-bellied Eremomela, Mouse-colored Penduline Tit, and many more, have been known to nest in the dense thorn and savannah vegetation near the T-junction along Mbale road, 11 kilometers from Town. The Dark Chanting Goshawk, stunning Black-headed plovers, Yellow-necked Spur fowl, and Crested Bustard can all be found if you head south from the junction for about 5 kilometers. Temminck’s Courser, D’Arnaud’s Barbets, and Grey Wren Warbler can be seen frequently at the airstrip close to Town.

The ideal time to visit Bisina Lakes.

Even though you may see birds all year round, the best times to go birding in the area are from March to May during the rainy season and from October to November during the fall because you can see a lot of Fox’s weavers, African Pygmy Goose, and Lesser Jacana, among other birds.

The water that flows into the Falls comes from the slopes of Mount Elgon, which is situated in the Kapchorwa District in Eastern Uganda, northeast of Mbale and the Sironko District. These Falls are located close to the Kenyan border, on the outskirts of the Mountain Elgon National Park.

In addition to being the beginning point for many hikers attempting to summit Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls is well-liked for its chilly climate, its icy cold water, which some claim has therapeutic properties, and its proximity to the Bagishu Arabica coffee plantations, which are grown at elevations of roughly 1600 meters above sea level.

The magnificent Waterfalls get their name from the Sipi River, which was named for the “Sep,” a native plant that grows along the riverbanks. This plant, which has translucent green fronds with a crimson red bolt, resembles a particular kind of wild banana and is used medicinally to cure illnesses like fever and measles.

According to local legend, British tourists once asked a woman gathering wild plants in a neighboring plantation what the name of the fall was. Thinking they were asking the name of the plant, she responded, “Sep.”
