History of the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve.
Originally established in 1968, Bugungu Wildlife Reserve is a tinny habitat covering the savannah grassland and temporary/seasonal wetland at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment to the western side of the vast Murchison Falls National park-the oldest and largest protected Area in Uganda.
Found in North-Western Uganda, Bugungu is a component of the vast Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which consists of the Karuma Wildlife Reserve and the oldest and biggest National park in the whole country, Murchison Falls National park. Bugungu Wildlife Reserve is in Bulisa and Masindi districts.

The ideal visiting time for Bugungu Wildlife Reserve
The ideal times to visit Bugungu wildlife reserve are late June to mid-September and December to February, during the dry season.
Usually avoided is the rainy season from late February to May and mid-October to November as the inadequate roads going to the Wildlife Reserve usually become muddy and treacherous. This is one of the major reasons visitors are recommended to utilize 4WD cars that can negotiate the slick roadways.

How to reach Bugungu’s reserve of wildlife?
From Masindi in Kampala.
From the Kampala, the main capital of Uganda, you will drive across royal mile in Budongo forest before hitting Bisso town, which is near the escarpment overlooking lake albert. The 210km from the Kampala takes you across the open savannah grassland of Nakasongola where Uganda’s only white rhinos are kept to Masindi.

From Murchison, the 51km route winds via Bulisa, 35kms before then continuing for 15 kms to the wildlife reserve on Bulisa- Hoima route.

From the kibale forest national, the 305 km route traverses the cities of Kyenjojo, Kagadi, Hoima before dipping to the Lake Albert escarpment on Hoima Bulisa road.
