When monitoring chimpanzees, how are they classified?
It is standard practice to observe chimpanzees for at least five years once they have completed a habituation period during which they get acclimated to human presence. In addition to living in large groups, chimpanzees are territorial and have a single dominant male.
Chimpanzees often form smaller groups, particularly while foraging, and then reassemble to socialize and, more often than not, groom one another. Although you are permitted to spend an hour with the chimpanzees on each walk, you may only view five or seven of them at a time due to the fact that the group splits off. All of the chimpanzees have unique names that the researchers use.
Trekking with Chimpanzees in the Kibale Forest
First thing in the morning on the day of your chimpanzee trekking adventure is to eat breakfast. After that, you’ll meet your guide and go to the park’s visitor center, where you and other guests will get a rundown on what to do and what not to do during your chimpanzee stroll. Following the orientation, you will be divided into groups of six, assigned a ranger to accompany you on your walk, and then you will set off.
Depending on the whereabouts of the chimpanzees, we either drive or walk to the beginning site. Wild chimpanzees aren’t used to humans or other creatures like elephants, therefore the ranger carries a gun at all times to keep you safe in the bush.
After you’ve spent an hour with the chimpanzees, you have to either return to the park headquarters on foot or take a vehicle back to your accommodation. There is a morning (AM) and an afternoon (PM) shift because chimpanzee tracking happens twice daily. You can generally find the tracking time on the visitor’s permit.
There are two options for chimpanzee encounters: the hour-long walking and the full-day Habituation experience. Beginning at around 6:30 in the morning, you will begin to accompany them as they awaken. During a habituation period, you have more time to observe and understand the daily routines and habits of chimpanzees.
Until they begin to build their nests for the night, you will accompany them during the day. Take into consideration that following chimpanzees is not easy and calls for a certain degree of physical condition.
