Lake Kivu-Rwanda.
Lake Kivu-Rwanda.
Among the African Great Lakes is lake Kivu-Rwanda. It is in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of East Africa Rift valley, on the boundary between the Democratic Republic Congo and Rwanda. Lake Kivu discharges into the Ruzizi River, which runs south-east into Lake Tanganyika.
One of the ideal locations to unwind after your Gorilla trekking adventure is Rubavu, formerly known as Gisenyi, a big town on the northern border of the lake an hour’s drive from Volcanoes National Park. Once a colonial beach resort of renown, Rubavu’s waterfront is studded with fading ancient homes, hotels and modern restaurants on the lake coast, excellent for sun downer, drinks on and around the lake.
Popular beach resort Karongi half-way around the lake has slopes covered with pines and eucalyptus as a background to the glittering lake. Local fisherman paddling in tandem carry over the river the sound of sunrise and evening singing.
Starting in Rubavu in the north and running 227 kilometers of stunning scenery all the way to Rusizi in the south of Lake Kivu, the Congo Nile Trail is As it winds around the slopes and hills next to the lake, the route softly swings back and forth with eucalyptus trees bordering the road and every inch of the hills seeming terraced with bananas.
