COMPARING GORILLA SAFARIS IN AFRICA
Trekking Costs, Distance, Difficulty, and Other Extra Activities
Seeing mountain gorillas in the forest is one of the most magnificent and unforgettable experiences for trekkers, but deciding where to go, when to go, and what to bring is essential before departing for your mountain gorilla trekking location.
Mountain gorillas can only be found in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This means they may trek in four National Parks in these three countries: Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda). It is critical that you gather as much information as possible before deciding whether to hike gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Gorilla Tracking In Uganda
Hiking gorillas in Uganda is primarily done at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with a small amount also done in Mount Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Mgahinga, like the other two Virunga National Parks, is part of the Virunga Massif, although it only includes one habituated gorilla family, whereas the other groups are in Bwindi Forest.
Uganda is home to around 400 mountain gorillas, accounting for half of the world’s surviving population of this endangered species. There are 17 gorilla groups to hike, 15 in Bwindi and two in Mgahinga.
One gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is significantly less expensive than in Rwanda, costing only $600 per day. According to this comparison, in most cases, the cost of the gorilla permit influences the visitor’s selection about where to trek gorillas from, and they end up picking Uganda as their destination. Nevertheless, accessing gorillas in Uganda is more difficult and time-consuming than in Rwanda.
Visitors may also participate in Gorilla Habituation, which entails spending around 4 hours with the gorillas as opposed to the 1-hour experience spent trekking gorillas. The habituation permit costs $1500 per person per day, which is less than the $1500 required in Rwanda to view gorillas for one hour. Apart from seeing gorillas, there are 9 additional National Parks to explore in addition to Rwanda’s four! You may combine your gorilla vacation with a visit to Kibale National Park, which has the largest concentration of chimps in Africa, or you can see the Murchison Falls, walk Rwenzori and Mountain Elgon, go Nile rafting, or attend one of the 52 tribes’ cultural exhibits, among other things.
Because Bwindi Forest National Park is distant from Entebbe International Airport, the travel is exhausting and lengthy, especially if you do not have a layover in any of the other National Parks. It is a 9 to 10-hour trip from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi, but if you don’t want to drive, you may take a scheduled aircraft to the park. Most travelers who wish to go gorilla trekking in Uganda, however, fly into Kigali and then drive 4 hours to Bwindi, which is considerably simpler.
Gorilla Tracking In The DRC
Notwithstanding the problems associated with the Goma political upheaval, hiking gorillas in Virunga National Park is less expensive than in Uganda or Rwanda, with a Congo gorilla trekking permit (foreigners) costing $400 and a Congolese permit costing $150. The park is Africa’s oldest, and it has the most biodiversity.
The Park still exists as one of Africa’s most distinctive locations with a multitude of magnificent characteristics including the active volcanoes; Nyiragongo which can be ascended in one day and the Nyamuragira Volcano which last erupted in 2011.
Despite the instability, violence, and conservation challenges, the team and park rangers have managed to increase the number of mountain gorillas from 75 to over 300 individuals over the years.
There are approximately 6 habituated families in Virunga, however, these numbers fluctuate as new families are introduced and groups of gorillas might travel from Rwanda. All mountain gorillas may be found in the Park’s south-eastern section, near the borders with Uganda and Rwanda.
In addition, the number of people visiting the park has surged since 2014, when it reopened after a long period of closure. In addition to trekking gorillas, Virunga National Park has a habituated troop of chimps that you may visit.
While deciding where to hike mountain gorillas, there are several aspects to consider. The cost of a gorilla permit does not provide a whole picture of what it is like. So, since we are comparing Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we should consider other factors such as the airport to fly to, the location where gorilla trekking begins, the number of habituated gorilla families, accommodation options, weather conditions, safety, and other activities to do.
What Is The Most Affordable Gorilla Safari
If all you want is the cheapest Gorilla safari, DR Congo is the place to go. It is also pretty inexpensive and simple to go to Virunga because you fly to Kigali and then drive 3 hours to Goma. Nonetheless, there are a number of safety concerns in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Some activities to do after hiking include watching habituated chimps or climbing Mount Nyiragongo to round up your time in DRC.
What Is The Second Reasonably Gorilla Safari Choice
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is the second most economical choice; a gorilla permit is still $700 per person. Accommodation options range from deluxe lodges to inexpensive accommodations, depending on where you start your trip.
If you don’t want to drive for 9 hours to get to Bwindi National Park, you may fly from Entebbe to the park utilizing domestic aircraft. Uganda has become extremely popular during the peak season since Rwanda raised the cost of gorilla licenses. As a result, you must make your reservation as soon as possible to minimize inconvenience.
Other activities to enjoy after a gorilla trek include game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park (the most visited park) and watching its climbing lions, Pygmy visits that include traditional dances and visits to the local medicine man, and visiting Lake Bunyonyi, especially if you are from Mgahinga.
What Is The Luxury Gorilla Safari Destination
Are you looking for more private and personal encounters as a premium traveler? Rwanda responds nicely. The lodges in and surrounding Volcanoes National Park are magnificent, in stunning locations, and have prominent brands in the luxury tourism industry.
What Is The Low-Cost Gorilla Safari
Uganda’s gorilla permit costs $ 700, yet the country has ten national parks, compared to Rwanda’s four. As a result, there is a lot to see and do in Uganda.
Despite the fact that Rwanda’s gorilla permit is the most costly than Uganda and DR Congo (offered at $1,500 per permit), Rwanda still stands out as the most well-organized and safest area to hike gorillas.
After the trip, you may extend your experience by visiting Dian Fossey’s grave, seeing local towns, climbing volcanoes in the region, visiting Lake Kivu, visiting the Dian Fossey Gorilla Museum, and watching golden monkeys.
How Long Is Gorilla Trekking / Tracking In Uganda, Rwanda, And Congo
The duration of gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo can vary, but typically the actual time spent with the gorillas is limited to a maximum of one hour. The trek itself, however, can take varying lengths of time depending on several factors such as the location of the gorilla group, their movement patterns, and the terrain.
On average, the trek can range from 1 to 4 hours, but it’s important to note that it can be longer or shorter depending on the specific circumstances of each trek. It’s recommended to be prepared for a moderate to strenuous hike through dense vegetation, including steep slopes and uneven terrain. The overall duration of the experience, including briefing, trekking, and the hour spent with the gorillas, is typically a half-day activity, but it’s advisable to allocate a full day in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
What Are The Chances Of Seeing Mountain Gorillas
The chances of seeing mountain gorillas during gorilla trekking are generally quite high, but it is important to note that they are wild animals in their natural habitat, and their movements can be unpredictable. The authorities and park rangers responsible for gorilla trekking have extensive knowledge of the gorilla groups and their locations, which significantly increases the chances of successful sightings.
The trackers and guides accompanying visitors on the trek are skilled at locating the gorillas based on recent sightings and other indicators. However, there can be rare instances where the gorillas may be more difficult to locate due to their movement or temporary relocation. It’s important to approach gorilla trekking with the understanding that it is a wilderness experience, and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Nonetheless, the efforts made by the experienced teams involved in gorilla trekking greatly enhance the likelihood of an unforgettable encounter with these magnificent creatures.
Is It Possible To Track Uganda Gorillas Via Rwanda
Yes, it is possible to track gorillas in Uganda by starting from Rwanda. There is a cross-border arrangement that allows visitors to track gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park while entering and exiting through Rwanda. This option is convenient for those who are already in Rwanda or prefer to fly into Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport, as it provides an opportunity to explore the gorillas in Uganda without the need for additional long-distance travel.
However, it’s important to note that this option requires coordination between the relevant authorities and tour operators in both countries to ensure a smooth and seamless experience. It’s advisable to consult with a reputable tour operator who can assist in organizing the necessary permits, transportation, and logistics for a cross-border gorilla tracking experience.
How Many People Are Allowed To Visit A Gorilla Family
To minimize disturbance and ensure the well-being of the gorillas, a limited number of people are allowed to visit a gorilla family during each trekking session. Generally, the maximum number of visitors permitted to visit a gorilla family is eight individuals. This small group size helps to maintain a peaceful and non-threatening environment for the gorillas, allowing them to go about their natural activities without feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
By limiting the number of visitors, it also ensures a more intimate and immersive experience for those fortunate enough to observe the gorillas up close. This restriction helps to protect the gorillas and their habitat while preserving the authenticity and conservation focus of gorilla trekking as a sustainable tourism activity.
What Is The Difference Between Gorilla Tracking And Gorilla Trekking
The terms “gorilla tracking” and “gorilla trekking” are often used interchangeably, but there can be slight differences in their connotations. Generally, gorilla tracking refers to the act of following and locating gorilla groups in their natural habitat, usually with the assistance of experienced trackers who track the gorillas’ movements through their fresh trails and signs. It may involve shorter distances and less strenuous hikes, as the focus is primarily on finding and observing the gorillas.
On the other hand, gorilla trekking typically involves a more extended and physically demanding hike through forests and rugged terrains to reach the gorillas’ location. It implies a journey or expedition-like experience, often requiring more time and effort. Both activities provide the opportunity to witness and interact with gorillas in their natural environment, but the term “gorilla trekking” suggests a more immersive and adventurous experience, while “gorilla tracking” may focus more on the tracking aspect itself. Ultimately, the choice of terminology may vary depending on personal preference and regional context.
What Is Gorilla Trekking or Gorilla Tracking
Gorilla trekking, also known as gorilla tracking, is an exhilarating wildlife adventure that involves hiking through dense forests in search of rare and endangered mountain gorillas. It typically takes place in countries like Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where these magnificent creatures reside.
Led by experienced guides, visitors embark on a trek to locate a gorilla family, observing them in their natural habitat. Once the gorillas are found, visitors are allowed a brief but unforgettable encounter, observing their behavior, social interactions, and witnessing their sheer power and grace. Gorilla trekking offers a unique opportunity to connect with these remarkable animals while promoting conservation efforts and raising awareness about their vulnerable status in the wild.
What Is Gorilla Habituation or Gorilla Habituation Experience
Gorilla habituation is a process aimed at acclimating wild gorilla groups to human presence, making them gradually more comfortable and familiar with human observers. It involves a team of researchers and trackers spending extended periods of time with a particular gorilla group in their natural habitat.
Through consistent and patient interactions, the gorillas become accustomed to human presence, reducing their fear and aggression towards humans. This process allows for longer and more sustained observation of gorilla behavior, facilitating scientific research, conservation efforts, and ultimately enhancing the visitor experience. Gorilla habituation is a vital tool in studying and protecting these endangered species, contributing to their long-term survival in the wild.
What Is The Best Time To Trek Gorillas
The best time to trek gorillas is during the dry seasons, which typically fall within the months of December to February and June to September. During these periods, the weather is generally more stable, with less rainfall, making the trails less muddy and more accessible.
The dry seasons also coincide with the peak tourist seasons, resulting in higher chances of securing permits and availability of accommodations. However, it’s important to note that gorilla trekking can be undertaken throughout the year, and sightings are still possible during the wetter months. It’s advisable to check with local authorities or tour operators for specific recommendations and updates on gorilla behavior and accessibility in the chosen destination.
What Is The Cost Of Gorilla Tracking In Uganda
The cost of gorilla tracking in Uganda is $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and UGX 250,000 for East African residents. The permit fee is the same for both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Additionally, it’s worth considering that the permit fee contributes to conservation efforts and helps protect these endangered species and their habitats.
What Is The Price Of A Gorilla Permit In Uganda, Rwanda, And Congo

In Uganda, the gorilla permit fee is $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and UGX 250,000 for East African residents. In Rwanda, the gorilla permit fee is significantly higher, set at $1,500 for all visitors. In Congo (Virunga National Park), the gorilla permit fee is $400 during the low season and $450 during the high season.
Why Should I Book A Gorilla Permit
Booking a gorilla permit is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it guarantees your opportunity to embark on a gorilla trekking adventure, as permits are limited and in high demand. By securing a permit in advance, you ensure that you have a confirmed spot to visit the gorillas on your preferred date. Additionally, gorilla permits contribute directly to conservation efforts, as the funds generated are used for the protection and preservation of gorilla habitats, anti-poaching initiatives, and community development projects.
By purchasing a permit, you actively support the conservation of these endangered species and contribute to the sustainable management of their fragile ecosystems. Moreover, the experience of encountering gorillas in the wild is truly awe-inspiring and offers a profound connection with nature. It is a rare and unforgettable opportunity to witness these majestic creatures up close, observe their behavior, and gain a deeper understanding of their importance in the natural world.
What Is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a remarkable and unique natural treasure located in southwestern Uganda. It is renowned for its dense vegetation, ancient montane rainforest, and rugged terrain, which earned it the name “impenetrable.” This pristine forest is internationally recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to approximately half of the world’s remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas. In addition to gorillas, Bwindi is rich in biodiversity, hosting a wide range of plant and animal species, including other primates, birds, and mammals.
The forest offers incredible opportunities for gorilla trekking, allowing visitors to embark on an unforgettable adventure through its lush trails and immerse themselves in the untouched beauty of one of Africa’s most exceptional ecosystems. Beyond its ecological significance, Bwindi is also deeply intertwined with the local communities, who have a profound cultural connection to the forest and actively participate in conservation efforts. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a sanctuary of rare and captivating beauty, offering a unique blend of wildlife conservation, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural heritage.
What Is Included On A Gorilla Permit
A gorilla permit typically includes several key components essential for a gorilla trekking experience. Firstly, it grants you access to the designated gorilla trekking area or national park where the gorillas reside. It also includes the services of an experienced guide who will lead your trek and provide valuable information about the gorillas and the surrounding environment.
The permit ensures a specific time slot for your trek, allowing for a limited number of visitors to be in the presence of the gorillas at a given time to minimize disturbance. Additionally, the permit contributes to conservation efforts, as a portion of the fee goes towards protecting the gorillas and their habitat. It’s important to note that the permit generally does not include transportation to and from the park, accommodation, meals, or other associated costs, which are usually arranged separately or as part of a tour package.
What Is T he Age Limit Of Gorilla Trekking
The age limit for gorilla trekking varies among countries and national parks. In general, the minimum age limit for gorilla trekking is usually set at 15 or 16 years old. This is primarily to ensure the safety and well-being of both the gorillas and the visitors. The physical demands of the trek, which can involve hiking through challenging terrain, may not be suitable for younger children.
Additionally, the guidelines aim to minimize potential disruptions to the gorilla groups and their natural behavior. It’s important to check the specific age restrictions of the destination you plan to visit, as they may vary. However, there are alternative activities and experiences available for those who do not meet the age requirements, allowing them to still engage with wildlife and conservation efforts in a suitable and enjoyable manner.
What To Pack For Gorilla Tracking
When preparing for gorilla trekking, it’s important to pack essential items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. These typically include sturdy and comfortable hiking boots or shoes, as the trek involves traversing uneven and muddy terrain. Lightweight and breathable clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and pants, are recommended to protect against insects and vegetation.
A waterproof jacket or poncho is essential in case of rain or sudden weather changes. It’s also advisable to bring a small backpack to carry water, snacks, and personal belongings. Other important items to pack include sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, sunglasses, a camera with extra batteries, and binoculars for optimal wildlife viewing. Additionally, it’s crucial to have a valid passport, necessary travel documents, and any required medications or personal items. It’s recommended to check with your tour operator or local authorities for a comprehensive packing list tailored to the specific destination and season.
When Should I Book A Gorilla Permit
It is highly recommended to book a gorilla permit well in advance, preferably several months ahead of your desired trekking date. Gorilla permits are in high demand, and the number of permits available for each gorilla group is limited. Therefore, booking early increases your chances of securing a permit and ensures that you have a confirmed spot for your preferred trekking day.
The popularity of gorilla trekking, especially in countries like Uganda and Rwanda, means that permits can sell out quickly, particularly during peak tourist seasons. By booking in advance, you can avoid disappointment and have ample time to plan your travel logistics, accommodation, and other arrangements for a smooth and unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.
What Is The Fitness Level Needed For Gorilla Tracking
A moderate level of fitness is generally recommended for gorilla tracking. While the exact physical demands can vary depending on factors such as the specific gorilla group location and terrain, trekking to see gorillas often involves hiking through dense forests, ascending and descending steep slopes, and navigating uneven and sometimes muddy paths.
Being in reasonably good physical condition can make the experience more enjoyable and manageable. It’s advisable to engage in regular exercise, such as walking or hiking, prior to the trek to build stamina and endurance. However, it’s important to communicate any specific fitness concerns or limitations to your tour operator or guide beforehand, as they can provide guidance and adapt the trek to accommodate your individual needs.
Gorilla Habituation Experience In Uganda – Spend More Time With The Gorillas
The true definition of the Gorilla Habituation Experience is unknown. Nevertheless, it may simply be described as the act of acclimating wild gorillas to the presence of humans. It incorporates several groups of individuals like trackers, conservationists, trackers, researchers, and rangers, among others, who complete this habituation process over a period of 2 to 3 years.
It is a learning experience that has only lately become a steady activity offered on a modest scale by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This experience limits the number of people to a maximum of four each day, thus bookings for this type of activity must be made 6 months before the actual habituation day, especially between the months of December through March and July through October.
Unlike gorilla trekking, which enables only an hour of interaction with the gorillas, gorilla habituation allows a person to spend four hours with the gorillas. Additionally, the cost of the Habituation experience is slightly higher – US$1500 for each person required, as opposed to US$700 for gorilla tracking.
Because this type of encounter is scarce in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it can only be found within Ugandan borders at the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It is here where close to 11 habituated Uganda gorilla safari groups may be discovered, including Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Mubare at Buhoma in the north of the park, and Mishaya, Bweza, Nshonji, Kahungye, Busingye, and the Nkuringo gorilla group at Rushaga in the south. The Oruzogo, Kyaguriro, and Bitukura gorilla groups are located far to the east in Ruhija. Unfortunately, only two groups, Nkuringo and Rushaga, were designated as gorilla families eligible for habituation.
During this process, the participants gain a better understanding of the gorillas as individuals, learn about their activities, and even learn to name them all. Finally, if the researchers are confident that the wild gorillas are not bothered by the presence of humans, a fake exercise is performed to validate their findings. After the gorillas pass this type of exercise, which now includes media and scientists, the gorilla troop becomes ready for trekking.
