Top 10 Best Tourist Attractions & Places to Visit in Zambia.
One of Africa’s most lucrative safari locations is Zambia. This southern African country, best known for the Victoria Falls, has 20 national parks, including the world-renowned South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Kafue. There are plenty of locations to see in Zambia to last you months, but here are the top ten tourist destinations we would recommend for your first trip.
1. Admire the Magnificent Victoria Falls
Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke That Thunders) is the local name for it. “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight,” exclaimed David Livingstone, the first European to see it. The mile-wide Victoria Falls is now formally recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Among Zambia’s tourism attractions, we would undoubtedly place this magnificent waterfall—the biggest curtain of flowing water in the world—first.
2. Drive in South Luangwa National Park at Night
The most visited national park in Zambia is South Luangwa National Park. There, safari visitors can expect to view a variety of antelope, lions, elephants, buffalo, hippo, giraffes, zebras, and more. The park’s most notable aspect, however, is the abundance of leopards, which are nearly always spotted during nighttime drives and are generally quite at ease with cars.
3. Avoid Hippos on a Lower Zambezi Canoe Safari
The portion of the Zambezi that runs past Lower Zambezi National Park is broad, level, winding, and littered with islands, in contrast to Batoka Gorge. Because of the high densities of crocodiles, hippos, and aquatic birds, this is an excellent place for canoe safaris. Canoeing past elephants, buffaloes, and, with any chance, lions, leopards, or African wild dogs is nearly a given.
4. Discover Kafue National Park’s Vast Wilderness
What’s impressive is Kafue National Park’s immense size. Over 150 mammal and 500 bird species can be found in Kafue, which is 22,400km²/8,645mi² and one of Africa’s three largest national parks. You could spend a few weeks exploring its many habitats. If you are short on time, you can see large carnivores in the Busanga and Nanzhila floodplains, and you can often see groups of more than 100 elephants in Lake Itezhi-Tezhi.
5. Walk the Big Five in North Luangwa National Park
The only destination in Zambia that supports all five of the Big Five is North Luangwa National Park. Despite this, it’s a somewhat niche location, with only a few upscale camps catering primarily to walking safaris. Walking through this wilderness knowing that you could run into a lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, or black rhino at any time is an incredible thrill, and the level of guiding is outstanding.
6. Witness the Migration of Wildebeest in Liuwa Plain
Liuwa Plain National Park, one of Zambia’s least visited tourist destinations, is well-known for the tens of thousands of wildebeest that gather on its southern plains during the summer. Although there are lions and cheetahs, the spotted hyena is the most common carnivore. It’s amazing to see these gregarious animals hunting or associating with one another outside of their dens.
7. Visit Kasanka National Park to See Millions of Fruit Bats
There aren’t many national parks where bats are the primary draw. However, up to 10 million straw-colored fruit bats are migrating through the densely forested Kasanka National Park. It’s quite thrilling to witness these massive bats emerge from their daytime roost in the evening or return there at dawn when you visit between October and December. At other times, the main draw is the chance to take pictures of the uncommon sitatunga antelope, which lives in swamps, from a well-positioned hide.
8. Pole Through the Bangweulu Wetlands’ Swamps
Bangweulu, one of Africa’s biggest and most biodiverse wetlands, is at the top of many birdwatchers’ lists of Zambian destinations. The shoebill, a large swamp creature known for its ridiculous clog-like bill, is the main prize here. It’s quite an adventure to glide through the marsh in a mokoro (wooden dugout canoe) in pursuit of this strange, prehistoric-looking object; you should also spot a lot of other birds.
9. Visit Shiwa Ng’andu to Travel Back in Time
In 1914, Stewart Gore-Browne founded the Shiwa Ng’andu estate, one of Zambia’s most quirky tourist destinations. Shiwa House, a time-warped colonial palace that appears to have been beamed intact from the English countryside a century ago, is its main attraction. Shiwa House is still occupied by Gore-Browne’s descendants, who provide morning tours that are entertaining and decorated in period style.
10. Conquer the Batoka Gorge’s roaring white waters
The Zambezi flows over a series of furious rapids that provide excellent white-water rafting below Victoria Falls before funneling into the steep-sided Batoka Gorge. Rafting on these rapids, which have names like Terminator, Washing Machine, Judgement Day, and Oblivion, is unquestionably the top activity for thrill-seekers in Zambia.
